The right category depends on your purpose of travel, nationality, residence and the activities you intend to undertake in the United States — and getting it wrong can cost you time, money and an appointment slot.

Which U.S. visa do you need?

The United States has different visa categories for temporary travel and permanent immigration. The correct category depends on what you intend to do there.

B1 / B2

Visitor Visa

Covers eligible business activities (B-1) and tourism, visiting family and friends, or certain medical treatment (B-2). Many applicants receive a combined B1/B2 visa.

Student Visa

Some applicants may also be subject to a visa issuance / reciprocity fee depending on nationality and classification. The Department of State is also currently testing an optional expedited appointment programme at selected locations for eligible B-visa applicants, involving a separate US$750 appointment fee where available and subject to eligibility. Conmigo Travels service fees are separate and are not U.S. government fees.

Where you apply matters

Applying for a U.S. visa from Dubai or Asia

The U.S. Department of State updated its instructions in July 2026 for nonimmigrant visa applicants. Applicants should generally schedule interviews at a U.S. embassy or consulate in their country of nationality or residence, subject to applicable exceptions and designated processing arrangements. Applicants relying on residence should be able to demonstrate residence in that country.

Being physically present in a country does not automatically mean it is the appropriate location for your application. Your nationality, current legal residence, visa category, immigration status and previous U.S. visa history may all be relevant.

Assuming a sponsor guarantees approval

A relative, friend or employer may support an application, but sponsorship does not guarantee approval.

Booking non-refundable travel too early

An application should not be treated as approved until the U.S. government has made its decision.
